Inventário Cultural Esculpido—the Sculpted Cultural Inventory— is a project by digital artist Guinga.Space celebrating the cultural richness of Indigenous, quilombola, caiçara and caboclo communities along the Ribeira de Iguape River in São Paulo’s Vale do Ribeira. It takes the form of digital 3D sculptures, presented with Spark AR augmented reality to create an interactive, immersive public experience.

Project objectives

  1. Cultural preservation: immortalise stories, memories and emblematic figures of the Vale do Ribeira, helping preserve and value local traditions.
  2. Community participation: involve local residents, including children and young people, through field visits and educational workshops that deepen appreciation of their own culture.
  3. Technology and art: combine Blender-based sculpture and Spark AR to create interactive artworks that come alive in physical environments.
  4. Social impact: strengthen younger generations’ connection to their cultural roots and encourage appreciation of the region’s intangible heritage.

Project components

  • Digital sculptures: six works, each addressing a particular theme in Indigenous, quilombola, caiçara and caboclo cultures.
  • Augmented reality: the proposed use of Spark AR allows sculptures to interact with physical surroundings, creating an immersive experience.
  • Workshops and talks: educational activities in local schools introduce 3D modelling and the importance of cultural preservation.
  • Exhibitions: digital sculptures are presented at local cultural centres, with free openings and cultural gatherings that invite community participation.

Method

  • Research and field visits: detailed study and visits to Indigenous, quilombola and caiçara communities support the sculptures’ cultural fidelity.
  • Creative process: digital sculpting in Blender is combined with texturing, lighting and rendering.
  • Interaction: augmented-reality filters, proposed in Spark AR, bring the sculptures to life and allow audiences to interact with them.

Expected impact

  • Cultural: preserve and celebrate traditions, keeping local communities’ stories and memories alive.
  • Educational: introduce digital art and technology to younger generations, encouraging creativity and interest in local culture.
  • Social: strengthen the region’s cultural identity and residents’ sense of belonging.

The Sculpted Cultural Inventory brings art, technology and culture together to celebrate one of São Paulo’s most culturally diverse regions. This archived description retains the tools and methods proposed at the time.
